Creating Community Through Art

hummingbird studio is a free, inclusive community art program where art belongs to everyone. Since 2015, we welcome artists of all ages and abilities to create, connect, and belong. We create in community, and everyone is encouraged  to make art and make friends in a safe, accessible space that’s full of possibility. A group of three artists from the Olympia School District hold up their paintings and collages at the end of a studio session at Friendship Hall in Downtown Olympia, WA.

At hummingbird studio, we believe that everyone is an artist. Our open studio sessions provide the materials, inspiration, and encouragement needed whether you love drawing, painting, collage, textiles, or mixed media. Each week brings a new optional theme, and our focus isn't on perfection. We celebrate the process rather than the product. We’re all about the joy of paint on paper, the freedom to experiment, and the connections that grow when people create side-by-side.

Every day in the studio reminds us how powerful creativity can be. Creativity builds confidence, sparks friendship, and connects people across all walks of life. This past year, hummingbird studio artists joined the Procession of the Species parade during the City of Olympia's Arts Walk and gathered under summer skies for Art in the Park at Tumwater Historical Park. We explored nature and imagination during our Art on the Farm summer series at GRuB, and proudly shared “Stories From the Heart,” our first art exhibit at the Olympia Timberland Library.

Artists. all dressed in black, celebrate The Procession of the Species parade holding brightly painted paper clay hummingbirds on wooden sticks decorated with multi-colored ribbon.

hummingbird studio thrives because of the generosity and love of our community. Your Give Local gift, no matter the size, helps keep this space alive, and helps to provide art supplies, staff support, and the welcoming environment that makes it all possible. Every donation counts. Together, we’ll make sure that everyone, regardless of background or ability, has a place to experience the magic of creating in community.

hummingbird studio celebrated its 10th birthday at Squaxin Park, and here volunteers and event helpers gather on the grass in front of the studio banner in a wide group shot. Several are wearing hot pink safety vests.

Looking ahead, we’re preparing for an exciting new chapter: our future home at the Olympia Armory Creative Campus, opening in 2027. With your support, hummingbird studio will continue to grow and shine as a place where creativity, connection, and belonging flourish for years to come.
