The Shelton Family Center DBA The Youth Connection is a non-profit with a focus on identifying and engaging youth who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. Our goal is to provide a Safe Place for ALL youth 12 to 24, to hang out, learn Life Skills & connect with resources. The Youth Connection has two buildings located in Mason County Washington, one in Belfair and one in Shelton. Any youth who walks into one of our buildings has access to our computers, Wi-Fi, food, and our clothing and hygiene closet without ever needing to sign up as a client.  As a client however we can help with a variety of situations or needs through our intensive case management. We can assist with getting life documents, shelter housing, emergency housing, eviction prevention, relocation fees, master-leasing, registering for other assistive programs and navigating their systems, and much more.

Youth who are at risk or homeless often face numerous challenges and adversities in their lives. They might lack stable housing, struggle with mental health issues, or have experienced trauma. For these youth, having positive experiences and role models can have a significant impact on their lives. These experiences can help them build resilience to overcome challenges and learn healthy coping mechanisms. Through activities like field trips, art, music, monthly parties, and holiday celebrations, we aim to create opportunities for them to have fun, bond with others, and create lasting memories. Additionally, we understand the value of hiring individuals with lived experience to serve as positive role models for these youth. By fostering a sense of community and belonging, The Youth Connection aims to empower each individual to overcome their challenges and achieve their full potential.

Youth homelessness is more prevalent than you might think. A 2017 study concluded that 1 in 10 young adults aged 18-25, and at least 1 in 30 youth aged 13-17, experience some form of homelessness unaccompanied by a parent or guardian each year. In 2023, the HUD count recorded 34,703 unaccompanied youth on a single night. These studies do not account for youth who have hidden or refused to report. Youth homelessness can seem like a daunting issue with no end in sight, which is why The Youth Connection is working hard to provide support and resources to young people in need. Through partnerships with local businesses, schools, and volunteers, we are creating a network of care that addresses the root causes of homelessness and ensures that no young person is left behind.
