We are in need of systems thinkers. Foundation Farms WA offers a systemic, community-rooted response to interconnected challenges facing our communities: loss of food sovereignty skills, social isolation, disconnection, and limited opportunities for people to contribute where they live. We believe lasting solutions must address the whole system. Our work uses farming, gardening, thoughtful design, mentorship, and relationship-building to create pathways toward Sovereignty through Skills, Belonging through Relationship, and Community through Service.

Foundation Farms WA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with three complementary programs.

The Incubator Farm Program supports aspiring and emerging farmers, particularly individuals from underserved and historically marginalized communities who have faced barriers to agricultural opportunity. The program is a rolling, three-year cohort providing hands-on farming experience, business development, and mentorship. Participants develop business plans that prepare them to pursue funding and build viable agricultural enterprises. They also learn to identify gaps and unmet needs within local food systems and develop ways to address them through farming, programming, partnerships, and charitable food donations. Mentorship continues beyond the cohort, providing ongoing support as farmers grow their enterprises and their capacity to serve their communities.

The Farmer in Residence Program brings this systems approach into service agencies and the communities they serve. Community garden projects often struggle because they lack sustainable programming and consistent routine maintenance. Foundation Farms addresses both challenges by placing a farmer within a service agency and providing mentorship from a seasoned farmer with agricultural and community-building expertise. In partnership with the agency, we thoughtfully design the built environment to incorporate gardens, food production, gathering spaces, and opportunities to develop food skills. The Farmer in Residence provides consistent programming for underserved clientele, while monthly maintenance and stewardship opportunities engage volunteers, families, neighbors, and community partners. The result is more than a garden—it is a living community asset that cultivates food skills, belonging, and connection.

Our third program, neighborhood-centered Garden Clubs, brings food sovereignty directly into the homes and neighborhoods where families live. Families learn to grow food in their own front yards while participating in neighborhood cohorts connected through facilitated community-building activities. Gatherings take place in participants’ neighborhoods and at Foundation Farms’ host farm, Seedpod Farm, creating opportunities to learn from one another, share experiences, and build lasting relationships. The program focuses on individual food sovereignty while intentionally placing that learning within community, helping families become more self-reliant while becoming more connected to their neighbors.

At the heart of our work is the belief captured by the adage “nothing for us without us.” The people and communities we serve are not simply recipients; they are participants, collaborators, and co-creators. We listen to community needs and invite neighbors to help shape the programs, spaces, and experiences that affect their lives. This keeps our work responsive, relevant, and rooted in genuine relationships.

Our three principles connect every aspect of our work. Sovereignty through Skills means equipping people with practical knowledge and hands-on experience that increase confidence and self-reliance. Belonging through Relationship means creating welcoming spaces where people can connect with one another, the land, and their communities. Community through Service means using our skills and resources to identify needs and strengthen the organizations, neighborhoods, and individuals around us.

We believe food and farming are powerful entry points for systemic community change. A farmer can become an entrepreneur and community resource. A garden can become a place for learning and belonging. A front yard can become a source of food sovereignty and neighborhood connection. An underused agency space can become a thriving community asset. By connecting these pieces, Foundation Farms cultivates the skills, relationships, and structures that help communities become stronger and more resilient.

We support this work through individual donations, the sale of farm products, partnerships, and—most importantly—community-building events that bring people together around shared work, food, learning, and celebration.
